Philosopher and Science Historian
During communist times, Zdeněk Kratochvíl studied theology, but was expelled from university for his contacts with the underground church and forbidden to study at other universities. Like many punished intellectuals, Kratochvíl worked as a stoker but also as a security guard and programmer. During this time, he studied philosophy independently. It wasn’t until 1989 that he was able to finish his degree in philosophy at Charles University. Today, he is the head of the department of philosophy and history of science at Charles University. He is the author of dozens of publications, essays, and books about nature and philosophy.
